A Day Trip to Peep the leaves
At Ember Hostel, we love fall in Colorado like nothing else. Sure, summer has its hikes and winter has its powder days, but autumn? Autumn is fleeting magic. It’s the moment the mountains put on their best show, when aspen groves ignite in gold, fiery orange, and that rare flicker of crimson against a crisp blue sky. If you’re staying with us in Denver this season, you owe yourself a day trip into the hills — because the Rockies don’t just turn colors, they glow.
The Call of the Quaking Aspen
Aspens aren’t like other trees. They shimmer. Each gust of wind sends a ripple through their round, coin-like leaves, catching light in a way that feels alive. Locals call it “quaking,” but when you’re in the middle of a grove, it feels more like nature applauding you for showing up.
And here’s the best part: peak color usually hits late September through early October, which means you don’t need a weeklong vacation to catch it. From Ember Hostel, you can be in the middle of a golden grove in just over an hour.
Where to Go
Kenosha Pass – About 1 hour 15 minutes from Denver, this is a classic spot and for good reason. Trails wind right through rolling aspen forests, and the views open up to South Park (yes, the real one).
Guanella Pass – A bit less crowded, with sweeping mountain vistas and bursts of color all the way up. Pack a picnic and pull off at one of the roadside overlooks.
Boreas Pass – Near Breckenridge, this old railroad route is lined with aspens that blaze yellow as you wind along the dirt road.
No car? No problem. Check with the Ember front desk — travelers are always teaming up for day trips. Chances are you’ll find a crew heading out, and we can point you toward local tour operators if you’d rather not drive.
How to Do It Right
Leave Early – Sunlight pouring through golden aspens is pure magic in the morning.
Layer Up – Colorado fall days swing between t-shirt warmth and puffy-jacket chill.
Bring Snacks – Trail mix, a thermos of coffee, maybe a flask of something stronger. You’ll thank yourself on the overlook.
Share the Moment – Snap a photo, sure. But also just stand there. Listen to the leaves. Let the quiet fill you. That’s the good stuff.
Back to Ember, Back to Cozy
The best part about a fall day trip? Coming home to our historic mansion hostel in Denver. Sink into the hot tub under the stars, trade stories with your bunkmates, and warm up by the fire pit. Autumn days may be fleeting, but the memories — and the friendships you’ll spark along the way — last long after the leaves fall.
So grab a crew, hit the road, and go find your golden moment. Fall in Colorado doesn’t wait for anyone — but it’s always worth chasing.
